New recruits help capture club champs title

The final championship capped off a fine season for first year players at the Raumati Bowling Club. Teaming up with the experienced Neal Pritchard, Reg Goston and Kurt Burgess, newcomer Ben Warren collected his first club championship title in the men’s fours. Warren is one of a number of new players from the club making an impact on the local bowling scene. At the recent Ka¯piti Centre singles championship for first and second year players, five of the eight quarterfinalists were Raumati players. The winner was Allen Hutchison and the runner-up Ron Olivecrona — both from Raumati. Olivecrona later partnered Laurie Flynn to win the Ka¯piti junior pairs title from fellow Raumati players Harry and Kathy Meechan. Club president John McBeth believed the new players were “definitely boosting the club”. “Competition among the new players is healthy and the more experienced players are starting to feel the pressure. “The influx of new members is also boosting the social atmosphere at the club.” With the enthusiastic novices eager to learn, the club recognises the need for top quality coaching. “We’re thrilled to have secured the services of two of New Zealand’s best players of recent times, Sharon Sims and Gary Lawson, to impart some of their knowledge. “It will be invaluable.” Championship results for the 2020-21 season: Singles: Reg Goston and Jane Bradbury Junior singles: Ron Olivecrona and Kathy Edney-Meechan Pairs: men — Steve Sargent, Arnold Osborne / women — Pat Taylor, Janet Wills / mixed — Mike Harvey, Lynn Carter.
