Burnout and the mobilisation of energy is a radical new book with the main objective to help individuals or organisations get out of burnout and to keep out of it. Drawing on her own experience, Annamaria Garden’s book is based on research, theory and practice. It clearly describes what burnout is and what it is not. We ask Annamaria some questions: Tell us a little about your new book This book is aimed at helping individuals and organisations get out of burnout and keep out of it. Further, it aims to help organisations activate or mobilise energy. It is based on research, theory and practice It is based on a key symptom: an extreme form of energy depletion. Low-burnout people have very different strategies for living and working than high-burnout people do. By following the strategies low- burnout people use, you can get out of burnout and stay out of it. There are three approaches or states that can help you understand this: boundaries, closure and selfinvestment. The book explains these. What exactly is burnout? Burnout is identified by severe energy depletion, energy fluctuations, being unable to do simple things like listen to music or talk to people. It is different from anxiety and depression. What inspired you to write this book? I was inspired watching mental health professionals do their jobs. There was a mix of people complaining about burnout and others doing the same demanding job who weren’t anywhere near burnout.. What do you hope people will take away from reading your book? First, how to get out of burnout and keep out of it. I keep out of burnout by adopting the strategies of the low-burnout people. You don’t have to quit your job or change your career if you are burnt out. Second, how to mobilise energy in yourself and in organisations. This concept, mobilisation of energy, is focused more on the job and organisation. (Burnout is focused more on the individual). The book describes the dynamic of mobilisation of energy so you can prevent organisations from being psychologically mixed up. What are the top three tips you would give to anyone worried about burnout? ■ If you are worried about it act immediately before it gets worse (when it is so hard to get out of it) ■ Add to your leisure time. Leisure activity is a means to immunise yourself from burnout ■ Adopt the strategies low-burnout people use to live and work.
