Different cultures on show at home
With a very multicultural staff it made perfect sense to Darlene Amboy, manager of Eileen Mary Residential Home, to feature cultures for at least one day a year. On Friday, May 7 that took place for the third time. Children from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tamaki Nui a Rua charmed the residents just before lunch singing their waiata. After lunch staff from India, the Philippines, Tonga, the Cook Islands and Samoa dressed in their finest national dress to perform for the residents in a concert after lunch. It was attended by mayor Tracey Collis and deputy mayor Erana PeetiWebber, the residents having friends and relatives as well. Tom Kamura was MC and he with Peter Tairea and friends added their Ma¯ori element with Scottish tunes starting and ending the concert. Four cultures stand by Eileen Mary manager Darlene Amboy — Punjabi, Filipino, Tongan and Indian.
